Home      Orton Gillingham Course
The goal of this course is to provide professionals/educators with a strong foundation in understanding the reading process and how it interconnects with spelling and writing. Work will be done to support participants in understanding the complexity in reading and the need for sequential, systematic, structured, multisensory instruction especially with students who are dyslexic. A working definition of dyslexia will be used as defined by the International Dyslexia Association. Course participants will learn a scope and sequence for introducing sound/symbol associations, spelling patterns, rules, and generalizations. Readings will be done with reflections as well as take home quizzes in order to demonstrate a solid understanding of the basic principles of Orton Gillingham instruction and how to teach lessons using this approach. Practicum experience will be used to demonstrate hands on with students that participants have learned a scope and sequence, ways to assess student knowledge in the tutorial, and can implement lesson plans based on the Orton Gillingham reading approach.
