It's A Mystery Camp:  A Whodunnit  Look at Literacy

Children receive one hour tutorials daily

Summer Sessions 2011

August 8- 12   9-3

Children Receive Tutoring Daily in the areas of Phonological Awareness, Reading Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing

Sunglow works with children ages 6-14 or grades 1-8 for our after school literacy support. Children are placed in small groups according to their age and grade levels. Separate middle school groups are available.

9am-3pm
Grades 7- high school can attend for just tutoring or volunteer to help and reduce tutoring fees

Students will read and explore mysteries in this  weeklong fun camp.  They will participate in reader's theatre and put on a mystery theatre luncheon in their characters.Kids age 6-14 have a  chance to read and share stories in the mystery genre.  Kids will have guided reading groups, read - aloud sessions and a book walk.  Literacy activities with arts and crafts that come alive will be added if raining. The afternoon wraps up with a vocabulary bingo session and popsicles. Otherwise it's off to the pool for an hour of swimming and fun in the afternoon.

The goal of these week long literacy camps is to use literature as a door to a broader world, and the core of these camps lies in building a foundation of knowledge while engaging children in enriching literacy activities that use differentiated instruction. The camps involve children in the world of literature and ideas by fostering self-expression and confidence. Students experience the satisification that accompanies insight and self-discovery while developing reading skills and a love of learning.   Groups are based on skills and ages as appropriately determined by each student.

We use Orton Gillingham to help children  improve their reading and spelling. At Sunglow we also work to help children improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
